What is Bullying?
Bullying is a form of aggressive behavior in which someone intentionally and repeatedly causes another person injury or discomfort. Bullying can take the form of physical contact, words or more subtle actions (American Psychological Association; http://www.apa.org/topics/bullying/).
Bullying is unwanted, aggressive behavior among school aged children that involves a real or perceived power imbalance. The behavior is repeated, or has the potential to be repeated, over time. Bullying includes actions such as making threats, spreading rumors, attacking someone physically or verbally, and excluding someone from a group on purpose (U.S. Department of Health & Human Services; http://www.stopbullying.gov/what-is-bullying/).

Schools are tasked in creating a safe and supportive environment in which bullying and violence are addressed through preventative measures and direct intervention. Comprehensive approaches to school safety and positive behavioral supports is necessary to address this issue. Bullying is a serious, pervasive problem that has many negative effects on children. It threatens the learning environment, increases mental health and behavior problems, increases risk of suicide and substance abuse, weakens student-school relationships, decreases academic achievement, and infringes on the rights of student's to receive equal educational opportunities in a safe school environment.
