Apps for Kids
Apps are great tools to use for learning and organization. They are readily available via iPhone, iPad, tablet, or other electronic device, and are usually free or quite affordable. The game-like format of computer-based games are effective for maintaining the attention of students and keeping them actively engaged through engaging visual and auditory stimuli. The iPad and other tablets have made educational content widely available. Identifying high-quality apps from the thousands of resources available is a significant challenge to teachers and parents. When well-developed apps are aligned to specific student needs, some students can make significant academic improvement. Students who receive supplementary app-based instructional time along with the core curriculum achieve 165% of their expected learning gains. Students enjoy the majority of the app-based educational games, even though it usually targets their academic weakness (http://www.esparklearning.com/results/student-achievement-engagement-in-educational-apps.html). This is an encouraging implication for the education of our students and supports the need for technology use in the classroom.
